At 63, most people are thinking about their retirement. But not Arthur McCaffery.

Arthur has just graduated from the Open University with a prestigious BSc in Engineering and Business Studies after six years of study while working full-time and, for six months, battling cancer.

An engineer, Arthur works at WGM Engineering in Glasgow training apprentices. But the degree is his first formal qualification.

He said: “I wanted to do it just to prove to myself that I could. It was for my own satisfaction. My wife Anne’s been very supportive. She’s been the long suffering wife left to sit downstairs alone while I went upstairs to do my work. It was quite challenging, especially at the start, and it’s been a long time of coming in from work, having my dinner and then studying for a few hours a night.”

He added: “I had a cancer scare in November. At the time I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to finish my course. I was going through chemotherapy, and was not really up to the job. But in May, I got the all clear, so now I’ve decided to enjoy life as much as I can.”
