Abigail Hayes, an 18 year old studying for her A Levels has been a volunteer for Martin Mere Wetland Centre since April 2013 as part of their education team leading children’s activities at weekends. I was told about Abigail by vInspired as she won their volunteer of the month award.

In this interview we talk about why Abigail started volunteering for the Martin Mere Wetland centre, why she thinks young people should get involved and volunteer, and whether she plans to volunteer in the future.

On the impact volunteering has had on her, Abigail said: “Before I started I would be apprehensive approaching people and talking to people but since I have been there (Wetlands Centre) I’ve overcome that and I have become a lot more confident around people and I can talk to customers easily now.

Abigail is a big advocate of volunteering, “Go out and get it (volunteering opportunity) because it’s really good

I think volunteering is really good and I encourage people, especially my age, to go out and look for volunteering opportunities
