‘Folic Fred, Part Deux’, released by the charity Shine, aims to spread the message that taking folic acid before pregnancy greatly reduces the risk of babies developing serious conditions such as spina bifida.

Each week on average 14 women in the UK receive the devastating news that their baby is affected by a Neural Tube Defect (NTD) such as spina bifida or anencephaly. Taking folic acid helps to reduces the risk of these serious and often life-threatening conditions by up to 72%, but only if taken regularly before conception, as a baby’s neural tube develops very early in pregnancy, before many women even realise that they’re pregnant.

Please watch and share the cartoon above, which tells the story of a woman who receives timely advice from ‘Folic Fred’ (an animated folic acid tablet) before she tries to conceive.
