Have you ever tried to breathe through a narrow straw? If you haven’t now is the time to try it! When you have tried it take a ‘straw-breathing selfie’ – aka ‘Strawfie’ and post it online with a comment about how breathing in such a restricted way made you feel.

The ‘Breathe With Me’ Strawfie Challenge is being used to demonstrate what people with cystic fibrosis experience when breathing.

Nottingham Forest defender Danny Fox, a celebrity ambassador for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, has done the challenge, and by doing so joined a growing social media trend.

Danny took the challenge as he has himself experienced losing a friend to the life-shortening condition that causes the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, to become clogged with thick sticky mucus, resulting in chronic infections and inflammation of the lungs.

“My really good friend Paul Williams died from this horrible condition at just 26 years old in November 2012, the same age as me,’ Fox said.

“We were devastated.  It is through Paul’s grit and determination not to let cystic fibrosis define him that I realized I should do everything I can to change things.

“I want to help raise awareness and funds to stop cystic fibrosis from cutting people off in the prime of their lives.

Cystic fibrosis directly affects around 10,000 people in the UK. Only half live to celebrate their 40th birthday.
