The Gardeners Rest is a community run pub in Neepsend, Sheffield with a high quality beer selection, a lovely beer garden, and regular arts and musical events.
The pub has a lovely saying: we’re more than a pub, we’re a community hub. And it’s a saying they put into practice by helping vulnerable adults and people with learning difficulties by providing employment opportunities and meeting space.
How the Community Owned Pub was Created
When in July 2016 the owners of the pub decided to retire after 18 years of service, locals came together to try and buy the pub. With advice from The Plunkett Foundation, a steering group of interested parties was formed with the intention of taking The Gardeners Rest into community ownership.
Three public meetings took place, and in 2016 The Gardeners Rest was registered as a Community Benefit Society.
The group ran a Community Share Offer which resulted in 382 shareholders buying shares worth £237,600 between them.
