Wednesday 12th August is International Youth Day and over 100,000 young people in over 70 countries across every continent will be taking to the streets, meeting their politicians and getting creative to show that they will be holding their leaders to account to deliver on these big promises.

In a guerilla stunt to mark International Youth Day Ladan Takow, 23 – a volunteer for international youth charity Restless Development – projected rarely seen images of global icons in their youth alongside an image of her own face onto the side of iconic London landmarks to demonstrate the power of young people.

The projections, which included Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Eleanor Roosevelt, appeared in Marble Arch and Trafalgar Square, and is one of more than 100 events happening this week in over 70 countries worldwide.

The events taking place for International Youth Day include:

  • A ‘hackathon’ being hosted at Google’s Headquarters in London
  • A bicycle rally in Costa Rica
  • A novelty football tournament in Nigeria
  • A travelling mural in Uganda
  • An underwater protest in Sri Lanka
  • A ‘Climate Change Caravan’ Festival in Tunisia
